Carpet Stains and Cleaning Methods

1. Ink Stains

  • Blot the stain gently with a clean, white cloth. Do not rub.
  • Test cleaning solution on a hidden area first.
  • Use rubbing alcohol (70–90% isopropyl): Dab with a cotton ball, pressing and lifting repeatedly. Use fresh cotton as ink transfers.
  • Alternatively, use a mix of 1 tbsp dish soap, 1 tbsp white vinegar, and 2 cups warm water. Sponge onto stain, wait 10 minutes, then blot dry.
  • Rinse with water and blot dry.

2. Gum

  • Place ice cubes in a plastic bag on the gum for 15–20 minutes until it hardens.
  • Gently scrape off with a dull knife or spoon.
  • Clean residue with mild carpet cleaner and blot dry.
  • Alternatively, use white vinegar or WD-40 to loosen gum, then clean area.

3. Nail Polish

  • Blot excess polish with a clean, white cloth.
  • Test cleaning solution on a hidden area first.
  • Use non-acetone nail polish remover: Dampen cloth and blot from edges inward.
  • Alternatively, use rubbing alcohol or hairspray for dried stains.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water and blot dry.

4. Wine

  • Blot stain immediately with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Pour cold water on stain and blot again.
  • Use a solution of 1 tbsp dish soap, 1 tbsp white vinegar, and 2 cups warm water. Dab with cloth, then wipe with clean water.
  • Alternatively, use a paste of 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water, let dry, then vacuum.
  • Rinse and blot dry.

5. Pet Urine

  • Blot urine with paper towels and newspaper until barely damp.
  • Rinse with cool water and blot again.
  • Apply enzymatic cleaner, let sit, then blot up.
  • For set-in stains, deep clean with a carpet extractor and apply odor neutralizer.

6. Vomit

  • Scrape off solids gently with a spoon or dull knife.
  • Blot with paper towels to absorb moisture.
  • Sprinkle baking soda, let sit 15+ minutes, then vacuum.
  • Clean with a solution of 1/4 tsp dish soap in 1 cup warm water or 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water. Blot from outside in.
  • Rinse with cold water, blot dry, and let air dry.
  • Use enzyme cleaner if odor persists.

7. Paint

  • Identify paint type: water-based (latex/acrylic) or oil-based.
  • For wet water-based paint: Blot excess, use 1 tsp dish soap in 1 cup warm water, blot from edges in, rinse and dry.
  • For wet oil-based paint: Blot excess, use paint thinner/turpentine (test first), then clean with dish soap solution, rinse and dry.
  • For dried paint: Gently scrape off, soften with warm soapy water (water-based) or paint thinner (oil-based), blot and repeat, rinse and dry.
  • Always test cleaning solutions first and ensure good ventilation when using solvents.

8. Glue

  • For wet glue: Blot gently with a clean cloth to absorb as much as possible.
  • For dried glue: Carefully scrape off with a blunt object.
  • For water-based glue: Blot with mild dish soap solution, rinse, and blot dry. Use vinegar solution if residue remains.
  • For hot-melt glue: Harden with ice, scrape off, then clean residue with isopropyl alcohol and mild detergent.
  • For super glue: Dab with a little acetone (test first), gently lift glue, then rinse with mild detergent.
  • For wood glue: Spray with warm vinegar, let sit, blot, then clean with dish soap solution.
  • Always test cleaning solutions first and avoid rubbing. Use commercial adhesive remover if needed.

9. Oily Substance

  • Blot excess oil with a clean, white cloth or paper towel. Do not rub.
  • Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch over the stain and let sit at least 15 minutes (overnight for old stains), then vacuum.
  • Mix 1 tsp clear dish soap with 1 cup warm water. Blot the stain from outside in with a clean cloth.
  • Rinse with plain water and blot dry.
  • For stubborn stains, blot with a cloth dampened with isopropyl rubbing alcohol (do not pour directly on carpet).
  • Dry the area with clean towels and weight until fully dry.
  • Always test cleaning solutions first and avoid overwetting.

10. Milk

  • Blot up as much of the spilled milk as possible with a clean, white cloth or paper towel. Do not rub.
  • Mix 1 tsp clear, non-bleach dish detergent with 2 cups warm water. Blot the stain from edges in with a clean cloth until lifted.
  • For persistent stains or odors, apply an enzyme-based cleaner and let sit per product instructions, then blot.
  • Rinse the area with cold water and blot dry.
  • If odor remains, sprinkle baking soda over the area, let sit for several hours or overnight, then vacuum.
  • Avoid hot water, and always test cleaning solutions first.
