It’s hard to believe that 2013 is already here as it seems as though everyone was just all a buzz about the new millennium beginning (and the world crashing into chaos because of Y2K) and yet here we are 13 years later (the world having survived the December 21 predicted world end) and so we must forge forward!
In doing so the first thing we need to do is to purge our closets of all the clothes still hanging backwards in the closet (that is if you turned all your hangers backwards last year). If you don’t have any clothes to purge it is time to turn all your hangers so that they are hanging backwards (hooked onto the rod from behind). Then as you wear items rehang them as you normally would. Next January 1st you can remove all the clothes still hanging backwards knowing that you haven’t worn them in the past year. (**Note: In doing this remember that there are certain things one doesn’t wear on a regular basis or perhaps even yearly that should not be purged. Such items might include evening gowns, tuxedos, funeral attire, wedding attire or maybe even that jean shirt that you might be called on to wear at a barn dance or the like). Most of it, however, should make its way either into the donate or discard pile.
The first week in January is also the week to clean exhaust fans and ceiling fans, to dust/wash/spot clean walls and door frames. As far as home maintenance goes, you should be inspecting and repairing all window and door hardware and oiling your paper shredder. In addition, you’ll want to check all your windows and doors for air leaks (weather stripping and grout) and note any necessary repairs to be done in the spring when the weather has warmed up some.
Of course, the above is in addition to your regular daily, weekly, every other week, monthly, every other month and seasonal household cleaning, maintenance and organization chores!
Happy New Year and here’s to starting the New Year right!
